A GWERU man who beat a police officer demanding the release of his friends who had been arrested was on Monday jailed for an effective six months after being convicted for assault.
Munyaradzi Musinga, 30, of Nkenyani Road in Mambo suburb assaulted Constable Munyaradzi Magwizi of Mtapa Police Station after the latter had arrested his friends at a local night club.
Magistrate Priscilla Magomore slapped Musinga with nine months before conditionally suspending three months.
In his defence Musinga said on the day in question he was drunk and could not remember anything.
But the magistrate said Musinga could not hide behind drunkenness and was supposed to take responsibility of his actions.
Prosecutors told the court that on December 27 last year, Magwizi and other police officers were on night patrol when they arrested Musinga’s friends at a night club in Mtapa.
Musinga demanded that Magwizi release his mates and when the latter declined he (Musinga) started beating him with fists before he was apprehended by other police officers.
