Mugabe motorcade accidents timeline

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s motorcade — believed to be the longest in Africa — has in the past been involved in serious accidents and, in all cases, the 93-year-old veteran nationalist escaped unhurt.

Several people have also been hauled before the courts on charges of failing to comply with police instructions when Mugabe’s motorcade races through Zimbabwe’s rugged roads.

A Victoria Falls man, Trinity Gonongono, is one classical example of how authorities punish those who fail to make way for the Zanu PF leader’s motorcade after he was slapped with a 30-year jail sentence.

Here are some of the accidents that have occurred in the past five years.

- June 2012: A motorbike in Mugabe’s cavalcade hit and killed a madman.

- June 2012: One of the cars in Mugabe’s motorcade rammed into a bus, resulting in the death of a person and injury of 15.

- June 2012: A private in the Presidential Guard, Jeoffrery Kuotekwa, died from injuries sustained when the open Land Cruiser vehicle he was travelling in overturned as it cleared the way for Mugabe who was returning from his rural home in Zvimba.

- October 2012: An outrider was seriously injured when his motorbike caught fire after colliding with a truck near Sam Levy village, in Borrowdale, Harare.

- April 2015: Mugabe’s motorcade was involved in an accident near the State House in Harare, resulting in serious injuries. A biker was hit by a truck and left bleeding and fighting for his life.

- June 2016: A kombi driver rammed into Mugabe’s motorcade, resulting in the injury of a biker. The kombi driver who had fled the accident scene, was apprehended later.

- May 2017: An outrider in the presidential motorcade was seriously injured.

- July 2017: A motorcycle outrider with the Presidential motorcade suffered a fractured arm after crashing into an Isuzu pick-up truck along Airport Road while escorting the First Family from Harare International Airport.

- July 2017: First Lady Grace Mugabe suffered an ankle injury at Harare International Airport after the First Couple’s chauffeur set the vehicle in motion before Grace had properly settled in. The sudden movement of the vehicle saw Grace withdraw her foot from the car, and as she lost her balance, one shoe came off and was run over by a rear wheel.
