University of Zimbabwe student, who was found dead in swimming pool at the campus, has been identified as Godfrey 'Flawa' Makawa, a budding dancehall chanter.
There was no official confirmation as police sources could not be reached for comment, but several friends and relatives posted their condolences on the student's Facebook wall as they mourned his death.
Provincial police spokesperson, Memory Pamire referred the matter to Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi who could not be reached for comment as his mobile phone went unaswered.
The Zim dancehall music fraternity however on Wednesday showed solidarity as it mourned the budding musician and producer Godfrey Makawa who better known by his moniker Flawa. He was found dead, floating in a swimming pool, on campus at the University of Zimbabwe on Wednesday morning.
Some schools of thought assert that Flawa was having problems with his girlfriend which might have driven him to commit suicide.
Flawa had just clinched a deal with internationally recognised record stable Abra Tribe Records led by Tawanda 'Jusa' Sibotshiwe and Simukai 'Simmz' Mandizvidza.
Both co-owners are respectively based in the United Kingdom and Bangladesh.
Flawa made his debut on radio three weeks ago when Judgment Yard selector DJ Flevah played his music on their show on Zi-FM Stereo and since then his music has been on demand by Judgment Yard listeners.
His song was on the In Your Arms riddim produced by Jusa and Abra Simmz.
The riddim also features Ras Caleb of the Tokwe-Mukosi fame.
DJ Flevah said he was shocked that such budding talent had been taken so early.
"I was shocked to learn of the young man's death. I played his music for three weeks in a row due to my listeners' requests and it's so sad. May his soul rest in peace," said DJ Flevah.
The producer of his music and former Zi-FM presenter Abra Simmz said: "It pains me deeply to hear that the young and very talented Flawa is no longer with us. He was a talented singer, and so passionate about music and just last week he had his track played on Zi-FM.
"After being so patient and hard-working in this tough music industry on his track on In your Arms Riddim by Jusa Dementor seemed (sic) to open the doors for him for more success. We had discussed releasing his new song as well soon and today I hear he has passed on.I am saddened."
He added: "I charge thee my friends please find sometime to pray for your friends, thanking God for each and everyone of them, praying for their protection. To friends and family . As Psalm 18:28 says You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. This young man's light will continue to shine. On behalf of Abra Tribe Records, I say rest in peace my friend Godfrey Makawa."
This publication could not immediately ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death in the pool and yesterday University of Zimbabwe officials were not forthcoming with the details.
Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
Flawa becomes the fourth youth to die in a freaky 'pool death' in the past fortnight.
Two weeks ago three other corpses were found in a pool at a Highlands house popularly known as the 'Boat House' after a party.
Police are still investigating the matter.
