A CHIVI man has been arrested after he allegedly raped his 11-month-old daughter who had been left in his custody.
The man (whose name we have withheld to protect the minor), was arrested on the same day after he failed to explain why his shirt, the toddler's dress and pants were blood-stained.
Chivi magistrate Francis Mapfumo remanded the accused in custody to next Thursday for trial.
Prosecutor Nixon Chamisa said on August 19 around 8am the toddler's mother left her husband in custody of the child whilst she went to the grinding mill. Upon her return around 10am, the child ran towards her mother crying hysterically and showing discomfort, at which the mother examined her.
The mother then realised that her child's clothes were blood-stained and her panties had been removed. She then asked her husband, who professed ignorance over the matter.
The mother took her daughter to her bedroom where she further discovered that her daughter was bleeding from her privates. The mother further interrogated her husband after seeing bloodstains on his shirt but he kept quiet.
She later found the child's panties hidden in a tool box in the bedroom hut and then took her child to the village headman for assistance. The headman advised her to take the matter to the police. The father tried to escape but was arrested by the police on the same day.
