Unknown suspects have reportedly tried to assassinate newly appointed Vice President Emmerson Mnagngagwa just after he was appointed the VP.
President Robert Mugabe said while announcing the new Politburo members, there was an attempt to take out Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa's life today when cyanide was sprayed in his office.
Police have reportedly cordoned off Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa's office, after finding acid in his office on the desk.
While Mnangagwa's condition could not be immediately ascertained, My Zimbabwe News has learnt that his personal assistant is said to be currently hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital.
The suspects are currently unknown and it is reported that police have begun their investigations.
Mnangagwa's secretary was affected by the cyanide when she opened the office and was rushed to a private hospital where she is battling for her life.
Cyanide is a deadly poison, which when inhaled causes a coma with seizures, apnea, and cardiac arrest, with death following in a matter of seconds.
At lower doses, loss of consciousness may be preceded by general weakness, giddiness, headaches, vertigo, confusion, and perceived difficulty in breathing.
The succession battle has not only turned dramatic, but nasty and ugly as the attempted assassination comes just two months after Mnangagwa escaped death by a whisker when his Mercedes Benz was rammed on the driver's side by a staff bus belonging to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals along Herbert Chitepo Avenue in Harare.
Both right side doors on the minister's vehicle were extensively damaged while the other vehicle sustained minor frontal damages but the determined politician escaped the freak accident without any blemish.
A month before the accident, burglars broke into the Justice Minister Mnangagwa's offices at the New Government Complex at night. The door was tampered with and the ministry made a police report on the following day.
As if that was not enough, in June this year, a farm house belonging to the Vice President Emmerson Mnagagwa's son, Emmerson (Jr), went up in smoke mysteriously, in broad day light.
The fire broke out at Eastclare Farm Plot 8, about 20km outside Kwekwe along Mvuma Road, razing the grass-thatched house to the ground.
