A MUM claimed that whenever she was alone with her baby, it would turn into a python and try to swallow her alive.
She said she heard a voice telling her to take the baby back to the waters where she had come from. So she allegedly threw the baby into a pit toilet, killing it.
Provincial police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the 27-year-old woman from Kwamhlanga, in Mpumalanga, murdered her five-month-old daughter in August.
The mother appeared recently in KwaMhlanga Magistrates Court on a murder charge. The court instructed that she be referred to a mental institution for observation.
Another 29-year-old woman appeared before the Mbibane Magistrates Court on a charge of concealment of birth last week.
"The woman gave birth to a baby boy while she was visiting her boyfriend on 20 December. She put the baby into a pit toilet and went back to sleep as if nothing had happened," said Mohlala.
The next day the boyfriend noticed a bloodied blanket in a bucket behind the pit toilet. He contacted the woman’s cousin hoping to get answers.
"The woman allegedly told her cousin that she had three other kids to look after and could not afford a fourth one."
Mohlala said the baby was found alive in the toilet and rushed to Mmametlhake Hospital in Hammanskraal, where he is recovering. The mum was granted R1,000 bail and will appear in court on 6 January.
The provincial acting commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major-General Advocate Meshack Nogwanya, described the two gruesome incidents as "barbaric".
