A teacher at Queen Elizabeth Junior School was slapped with a four months jail term after she stole $400 from Econet Wireless.

Thandiwe Mahachi, 24, who was doubling up as Econet’s Steward Bank agent was however, given an option to restitute Econet by November 14 this year or risk a custodial sentence.

Magistrate Rumbidzai Dzumbira suspended the entire four months on condition she pays the money back.

Mahachi pleaded guilty to theft and asked for clemency, saying poverty prompted her to commit the crime.

According prosecutor Benjamin Chikerema, on September 8 this year Mahachi who was Steward Bank agent withdrew $400 from two fake accounts and converted the money to personal use.

She resigned the following day after which the bank then carried out reconciliations and investigations which showed that Mahachi had stolen the money.

Magistrate Dzumbira ruled that it was a serious offence to steal from employers adding that such offences were on the rise.

She said it was court’s duty to pass deterrent sentences on such offenders in order to deter would be offenders.
