A Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officer has been hauled before the courts for reportedly assisting a serving prisoner to escape from jail.
Rudo Nyandoro, 38, of 36 Marlborough Drive in Harare, was employed at Chikurubi Female Prison.
She appeared before Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe facing a charge of aiding the escape from lawful custody of a serving prisoner.
She was granted $50 bail which was revoked by prosecutor Sharon Mashavira, who is appealing against the magistrate's decision at the High Court.
It is the State's case that the prisoner had served seven years out of a 10-year sentence for armed robbery.
Mashavira alleged that on July 14 this year at Harare Showgrounds, Nyandoro connived with a B Class male serving prisoner Shadreck Ndlovu Chidhuza and hatched a plan to assist him to escape prison.
Nyandoro booked Chidhuza together with nine other inmates and escorted them to Harare Agriculture Showgrounds to work at the ZPCS stand.
Around 2pm the same day, Nyandoro assisted Chidhuza to change into civilian attire and escape from ZPCS custody.
Prior to Chidhuza's escape, Nyandoro received $12 from Chidhuza's niece Dadirai Matare.
On June 26, Nyandoro also allowed an ex-convict Justin Mwale to visit Chidhuza.
She also rode in Mwale's car with Chidhuza and drove to Ballantyne Park in Borrowdale where Mwale allegedly bought them lunch.
Mwale was also allowed to visit Chidhuza on the day he escaped.
