TWO Odzi men were arrested while the third suspect is at large for allegedly raping and impregnating their orphaned teenage niece.
The two – Joe Gwidiba (60) of Mutizha Village in Marange and Mudzimu Mukandara (46) of Konyesai Village, Marange – are assisting police with investigations after allegedly raping the orphan and deciding to keep everything under wraps as a family secret.
The cat was let out of the bag after an anonymous caller reported the case to the police last week.
It is alleged that Joe Gwidiba (60) used to stay with the teenager since both her parents are now late.
"On the day she was raped, Gwidiba's wife had left the two (the orphan and Gwidiba) together for a day. Gwibida took advantage of his wife's absence to rape the teenager once. The incident happened in May 2013, but the complainant did not report the case to anyone," said deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chinanda.
He said in the same month, the second accused, Mudzimu Mukandara, invited the complainant to stay with him since his wife had gone to Chegutu.
It is alleged that Mukandara raped the teenager thrice, but she did not report the matter to anyone.
Asst Insp Chananda said in August last year, the complainant met the third accused, Christopher Munyoro of Konyesai Village, at Marange Business Centre and she was raped twice.
A few months later the complainant fell sick and was ferried to the hospital where it was discovered that she was pregnant.
"The family suggested that they would keep it as a secret. The young girl now has a baby. An anonymous caller informed the police who later arrested the two accused men. The third accused is still at large and police are appealing for information that may lead to his arrest," he said.
Asst Insp Chinanda urged families to report all criminal offences early.
