Zimbabweans living in South Africa are waiting with bated breath for the outcome of deliberations by cabinet on Wednesday to decide on their fate amid revelations there is a new Zimbabwean dispensation to be announced soon.

Two weeks ago, Zimbabwean Home Affairs minister Kembo Mohadi went to South Africa where he met with his counterpart, Malusi Gigaba, to deliberate on a possible extension of the Zimbabwe Special Dispensation Permits, but the outcome of the meeting was not yet made public.

On Tuesday, Mohadi said the South Africans had some reservations on the extension of the expiry date.

According to a South African government website, cabinet sat on Wednesday and approved a new dispensation.

"Cabinet approved the new Zimbabwean Dispensation in respect of workers' and residents' permits. The minster of Home Affairs will conduct a separate media briefing to announce details of this process," the website says.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean Community in South Africa (ZCSA) on Thursday said it was delighted that the SA government had finally deliberated on the issue of permits as they were anxious to know their fate in that country.

"We are delighted by this move. We are waiting the details from Gigaba," said ZCSA in a statement yesterday evening.

It is not yet known what awaits Zimbabweans as Gigaba had indicated South Africa would not renew the permits for fear of an upsurge of permanent residence applications.

He had also said there had been complaints from their trade unions that Zimbabweans should be sent packing as they are taking up jobs meant for locals.
