A man from Arda Farm in Umguza district on the outskirts of Bulawayo died moments after he was severely struck on the head and face with an axe by a man he suspected of having an affair with his wife.
Speaking to B-Metro, a relative of the deceased Somakheyi Moyo (36) who preferred not to be named said while Moyo was at his home with his wife named as naMamo her phone rang. That is when all the problems started.
The relative said: “Moyo checked the incoming call and saw that it was from Lushupo Sinamachaina (38) their neighbour and he answered the call. Unfortunately Lushupo kept quiet.”
Thinking that the reason he failed to answer may be due to a poor network, Moyo phoned Lushupo and once again he did not answer the call.
Moyo got suspicious that his wife was cheating on him with Lushupo and quizzed her but she stood her ground in denying the cheating accusations, said the source.
But he was not convinced by that as he walked his wife to Lushupo’s homestead.
“It was at around 8pm when they arrived at Lushupo’s homestead. Moyo asked Lushupo why he was calling his wife and why he did not answer when he phoned him. And he accused him of cheating with his wife,” said the relative.
An argument ensued and it spiralled into a fight and Lushupo reached for an axe and struck his love rival several times on the face and head,” the relative said.
“Moyo suffered injuries to the face and head as he lay on the ground and bled profusely. He tragically died on the scene as they were looking for transport to ferry him to a hospital,” the relative added.
Lushupo fled but was later arrested at a business centre.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.
“We urge members of the public to solve their differences amicably rather than resorting to violence and couples are discouraged from exchanging cellphones so as to avoid incidents similar to this one. Couples have to trust each other,” he said.
