A teacher at Kanetowa Primary School in Gokwe South District who beat up his colleague in full view of other teachers following a misunderstanding escaped jail by a whisker when he was fined $15 000.

Douglas Mundandi (42) was fined by Gokwe magistrate Hillary Ndlovu after he was found guilty of assaulting a fellow teacher Godfrey Takavada.

The State led by prosecutor Malvin Nzombe told the court that on 29 October 2021 at around 11am Takavada convened a meeting with other staff members to discuss work-related issues. Mundandi also attended that meeting.

The court heard that when the meeting ended at around 12.30 pm, Takavada then requested to meet Mundandi together with members of the disciplinary committee.

It was proved that Takavada advised Mundandi about a complaint which had come from a parent of one of his pupils who was not happy with the way he was conducting his duties.

That, however, did not go down well with Mundandi who in a fit of anger stormed out of the meeting.

He later came back wielding a boulder which he wanted to use it to crush Takavada’s head with. He was restrained from doing so by another teacher who took him away.

Soon after that he came back and beat up Takavada with fists. Takavada went and reported the matter to the police leading to Mundandi’s arrest.
