SHE WAS casually walking from the mall with her groceries when she was suddenly surrounded by three thugs.

The thugs tried to grab her handbag and groceries, and one of them even fired several shots, but the bullets missed the woman.

SO SHE PULLED OUT A GUN FROM HER BAG AND RETALIATED. THE WOMAN, WHO IS SAID TO BE AN OFF-DUTY COP, AIMED FOR THE ROBBER WITH A GUN AND SHOT HIM DEAD.

As she was loading her gun to take down the other two robbers, they fled. But one dumb robber returned to the scene of the crime with three friends to check if his friend was indeed dead.

The woman noticed him and told the Dawn Park cops, who were already at the scene on Alberon Road (R554) on Thursday, 13 October. The cops gave chase and the man was bust.

Residents from nearby houses sang the woman’s praises for a job well done. They said there wasn’t a single day they weren’t robbed when walking to Rondebult Mall.

“Thugs target us for our groceries and cash. The mall is a few metres away, but we have to use cars to get there to be safe or walk in groups,” said a resident.

“We salute this female cop for what she did and for her bravery. She really deserves an award. We are tired of being prisoners in our own neighbourhood.”

National police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said cops were investigating, and have opened an inquest docket after an off-duty police constable allegedly shot and fatally wounded a suspect who attempted to rob her at gunpoint in Dawn Park, Boksburg.

“Reports suggest that the officer was walking along the R554 route when she was accosted by three suspects, one of them carrying a firearm.

“The suspects allegedly demanded that she hand over all her belongings and the tactically astute constable drew her own service pistol and shot at the suspect who had a gun to her face,” said Netshiunda.

He said the suspect was declared dead at the scene, while the others had fled on foot and police are hot on the heels of a suspect.

He added that the suspect’s firearm was found at the scene and Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) were informed for further investigation.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was a 25-year-old Lesotho man who lived in Germiston,” he said.
