7 gunmen pounce on family, get away with US$16 000 and Toyota Fortuner

SEVEN gun-toting robbers pounced on a Mutare family in Westlea Extension on Sunday and terrorised them before making good their escape with US$16 000, a Toyota Fortuner and car keys.

The robbers later dumped the Toyota Fortuner in Florida, but went away with the car keys for a Mercedes Benz and the Toyota Fortuner.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident.

“The seven suspects pounced on the Westlea house where three people, Percival Mubaiwa, Lynette Mubaiwa and Takudzwa Ncube were in. Takudzwa met the gun wielding suspects at the garage, which is just outside the house.

‘‘They threatened to shoot him before force-marching him into the house. They went into Percival’s bedroom and demanded some money. They searched the room and stole US$16 000.

“They tied the three with cables and took away their cellphones. They later threw the cellphones in the yard before vanishing from the scene. The complainants managed to untie themselves,” said Inspector Muzondo.

One of the complainants recovered the cellphones from the yard and alerted a neighbour who made a police report.

“One Mr Mundondo called the police after he saw the stolen Toyota Fortuna parked at Corner Edward Road and George Street in Florida, blocking the gate of a house. Police were alerted and recovered the car,” he said.

The suspects are still at large.

Inspector Muzondo added: “We are appealing to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the seven suspects to contact their nearest police station. We will leave no stone unturned to bring the culprits to book. We also urge the public to desist from keeping large sums of money in their homes.”
