The resignation of Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson, Rita Makarau, a few months before the harmonised elections raise many questions, says a MDC top official.
Makarau is said to have tendered her resignation to the ZEC commissioners yesterday. Makarau’s deputy, Emmanuel Magade, will act as the head pending the appointment of a substantive chairperson.
“Rita Makarau’s resignation opens a can of worms.
“Why is she resigning just a few months before Election 2018? Has she been forced to resign?
“Was she pushing a factional agenda during her term of office as ZEC chairperson? Is she really her own person?” queried MDC T spokesperson, Obert Gutu on twitter.
Makarau’s resignation is believed to be centred on her link to the dismantled Zanu PF’s G40 faction.
A twitter user, Simba Nembawane, hinted that the opposition should celebrate Makarau’s exist as they always wanted her out due to her association with the ousted former president.
“At one time the opposition wanted her out because of her proximity to Mugabe. Now she is gone and you are questioning her exist and the credibility of 2018 elections,” he said.
Analysts say that Zimbabweans should focus on who will replace her, as that will ensure free and fair elections.
Apart from being head of ZEC, Makarau also serves as the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) secretary.
