The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has conferred 31 officers from the rank of Major to Lieutenant Colonels at a ceremony held at the Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks in the capital.
Guest of honour at the event Brigadier General Anselem Sanyatwe, Commander Presidential Guard said the appointment requires integrity and hard work in order to deal with the prevailing economic and political dispensation.
The duties of the appointed Lieutenant Colonels will encompass the management of manpower and they were urged to develop as well as guide their subordinates so that they perform efficiently as expected.
These promotions come after the Zimbabwe Defence Forces successfully carried an operation codenamed ‘Operation Restore Legacy’ that saw former President Robert Mugabe who had clung on to power for 37 years finally step down at the end of a dramatic and action-packed 8-day peaceful process. The army was being led by their former Commander General Constantino Chiwenga, who is now the Vice President of Zimbabwe.
Since then, lots of military personnel have been promoted, probably as a way of thanking them for a job well done.
Ten days ago, Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) President Emmerson Mnangagwa conducted an investiture ceremony at his Munhumutapa offices, which saw him conferring new ranks to promoted army generals. The promotions were done in terms of Section 216 of the Constitution and the Defence Act.
Zimbabwe National Army (Commander) Lieutenant General Philip Valerio Sibanda was nearly two weeks ago promoted to the rank of a full General. He becomes the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander taking over from General Constantino Guvheya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga, who has since retired and is now the Vice President. Gen Sibanda was replaced by Major- General Edzai Chimonyo as ZNA Commander.
President Mnangagwa promoted Maj-Gen Chimonyo to the rank of Lieutenant-General on assuming the new post. Before the promotion Maj-Gen Chimonyo who was on secondment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania with multiple accreditation to the Republics of Burundi and Rwanda. Former Air Force of Zimbabwe Commander Air Marshal Perrance Shiri was conferred with the rank of Air Chief Marshal on retirement.
He is now Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement Minister. Air Vice Marshal Elson Moyo was promoted to the rank of Air Marshal and replaces Air Chief Marshal Shiri as AFZ commander.
Also conferred with a new rank was Retired Major-General Engelbert Rugeje who became Lieutenant-General on retirement. Rt Lt-Gen Rugeje was appointed Zanu-PF national political commissar at the revolutionary party’s Extraordinary Congress last Friday.
Newly appointed Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Retired Major-General Sibusiso Moyo was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General on retirement.
