A MASVINGO Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operative has been slapped with a six months prison sentence after pleading guilty to negligent driving which resulted in the death of cyclist.
Sternford Machirori, 47, was convicted by a Masvingo Magistrate on Tuesday.
He will serve an effective three months behind bars after the magistrate suspended the rest of the sentence on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecutor Shamiso Masukume said the fatal accident occurred on May 11 this year as Machirori drove his Toyota Chaser vehicle along the Masvingo-Great Zimbabwe highway.
The CIO official is said to have knocked down cyclist George Matariyana who was traveling in the same direction but on the extreme left lane at the 10 km peg.
Matariyana died on the spot.
The court heard that Machirori was traveling at an excessive speed and failed to act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent.
The prosecutor said because of the speeding, Machirori failed to keep his vehicle under proper control and knocked down the cyclist.
Machirori pleaded for leniency, telling the court he is a reputable and respected government official who had also assisted at the funeral of the cyclist.
