Zim man escapes from South African prison, shoots 2 policemen, robs R14 million

A Zimbabwean man and his assumed accomplices are on the run after two police officers were shot on Tuesday morning.

It has been confirmed that Nchabaleng Mahlatse and Lucky Segopo shot the two policemen.

Police on Wednesday discovered a third person was also no longer in custody.

The escapee is a Zimbabwean who goes by the name of Kevin Masango, among several aliases he is known to use.

It's understood he has been denied bail on three occasions, because of evidence showing the ease at which he slips over the border makes him a flight risk.

Police have linked Masango to a R14 million cash in transit robbery in Silverton last year.

The two men, who were scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday on nine counts of robbery, obtained a firearm inside the court building.

Nchabeleng Mahlatse and Lucky Segopo are still on the run and believed to be armed with the firearm used to shoot the two policemen.

Police management have yet to explain how the third suspect, Masango, an awaiting trial prisoner, went unnoticed for an entire night before they realised he was missing.

SA Police spokesperson Khensani Magoai says there have been no new developments since it was confirmed the pair hijacked a vehicle in Atteridgeville on Tuesday.

This was the second vehicle Mahlatse and Segopo took at gunpoint, after hijacking a police vehicle outside court.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has urged investigators to quickly establish how the accused obtained a firearm in court.

The one police officer sustained a minor wound while the other remains in a critical condition in hospital.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has expressed deep concern over the escalating number of attacks on police officers. – ewn
