Gweru man poured boiling water on baby till she died

A LOWER Gweru man was arrested this week for allegedly killing his physically impaired 18-month-old baby girl by pouring hot water on her before secretly burying her.

Golden Madzivire, 31, from Matina Village, under Chief Sogwala, then threatened to kill his wife if she dared reveal the crime to the public.

Sources said Madzivire could not come to terms with his daughter's disability and systematically tortured the baby using a hot stone.

Police on Monday went to the stream where Madzivire allegedly buried the baby.

Madzivire appeared before Gweru magistrate, Florence Nago, on Wednesday facing a charge of murder. He was denied bail.

Nago ruled that Madzivire's case was a high profile matter adding the magistrates' court had no jurisdiction to preside over it. She said the matter will therefore be transferred to the High Court in September.

Prosecutor, Daniel Tafuma, told the court that sometime in April this year, Madzivire confronted his wife asking why the child was still not able to walk at 18 months. He said the wife replied that it was part of nature and "only God knows why this is so".

Madzivire began to systematically torture the child with a hot stone immersed in boiling water. He said the baby sustained serious burns on the face and did not receive any medical attention.

But on July 7 this year, Madzivire was left alone with the baby and poured hot water on the child leading to the death of the baby. He immediately buried the baby in a nearby stream.

Police, working on a tip off, arrested Madzivire, went to the stream and exhumed the baby's body.
