NEW TWIST: State alters charges against Mukandi’s killer

THE STATE has altered from culpable homicide charges to murder against a Harare man who was facing culpable homicide charges in a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of businessman and socialite Shingirayi Mukandi.

Alfred Takudzwa Machipisa, 25, who is out of custody on $150 bail, will be answering to murder charges once investigations into the charge are completed.

The accused’s lawyer, Anesu Bangidza, had argued that the State is being unfair since his client had been charged for culpable homicide charges.

State led by Linda Gadzikwa indicated that the reason for altering charges is because investigations into the matter have shown that Machipisa intentionally killed Mukandi.

Magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa remanded the matter to February 5 for further hearing.

Machipisa has been facing culpable homicide charges, failure to stop after an accident, failure to report an accident within 24 hours and failure to render assistance after an accident.

The State is alleging on July 22 around 9:00pm, Machipisa negligently and recklessly drove a white Isuzu KB300 double cab registration number ADM2734.

He was trailing Mukandi who was riding a green Kawasaki motorcycle along Harare Drive.

It is alleged that after passing house No. 201 Harare Drive in Mount Pleasant, Machipisa started speeding.

He allegedly failed to keep a proper lookout and failed to keep a safe distance between himself and the motorcycle.

He allegedly hit the motorcycle from behind and due to the impact, Mukandi flew off the motor cycle and landed 70 metres away. His body rested near the yellow line on the left side of the tarmac, while his motorcycle stopped about 150 metres away before the accused fled the scene.
