Despite claiming to be old fashioned, president ED Mnangagwa has shown a willingness to move with the times by launching his own website
This follows behind his Twitter account and Facebook page where the statesman occasionally does Q & A videos, update his followers on his activities among other things.
This new move is believed to be a further attempt to reach out to the country’s younger generation as well as the regional and international community. In a recent meeting the president also remarked on the need to utilize the ICT resources to a maximum as well as working towards an e-government and more dialogue.
ED, who has often referred to himself as the listening president continues to raise his social media bar high joining the ranks of several presidents including US’s Donal Trump and Uganda’s long serving president Yoweri Museveni who is fond of selfies.
Every politician these days wants to be seen as the ‘cool dad/cool mom’ type who is non intimidating ,easy to approach and can hold a conversation. Gone are the days when presidents were heavily barricaded in their offices under armed guard only to be seen occasionally when delivering a speech.
Now the public feels like they have a better glimpse into the president’s character and activities through social media. This perhaps is a good move as it curbs the need to view political leaders as demi-gods who only descend when they want votes.
This is also in line Zimbabwe’s ‘new dispensation” whose manifesto is ‘it’s no longer’ business as usual’. So what does Mnangagwa’s website entail?
On the website’s homepage, you are welcomed with an autobiography of his political career and his humble beginnings from birth to his participation in Zimbabwe’s Liberation Struggle.
One can also read more about his educational background and family.
