A KOMBI driver and his conductor recently kidnapped a police officer, strangled and assaulted him for delaying their work after he attended a scene of accident involving their vehicle and a private car, a Harare court heard over the weekend.
Clayton Chirere, 29, and Godfrey Ruwodo, 36, were arraigned before Harare magistrate Ruramai Chitumbura facing kidnapping and assault charges.
The complainant in the case is Fanuel Mudzimiri, a police officer stationed at Harare Central.
According to the state, on April 20 this year around5pm the accused were involved in a road accident in the Harare Central Business District.
Mudzimiri attended the scene and ordered the two to pull off the road so that he could take the details down.
However the crew told the officer that he was delaying them for no reason as the other car was not even damaged.
Upon realising that Chirere and Ruwodo were not complying, Mudzimiri got into the vehicle and sat on the front passenger seat before he ordered all the passengers out.
Chirere then ordered Ruwodo to drive away with the complainant.
On their way along Julius Nyerere Road, Chirere grabbed Mudzimiri and strangled him with a belt before he started assaulting him.
When they reached Seke Road, Ruwodo joined Chirere to assault the cop and continued driving.
Court heard there was traffic jam when they reached traffic lights at Cocacola Company.
Mudzimiri managed to escape before he took the registration number of the vehicle.
He reported the case and investigations led to the arrest of the two.
The accused were remanded in custody and will be back in court on Monday for their bail application on assault charges.
Peter Kachirika prosecuted.
