ASPIRING Zanu PF MP for Mt Darwin South constituency businessman James Makamba has been disqualified from contesting in the party primary elections expected to take place this Saturday.
Makamba’s name was in the final list of 19 aspiring candidates announced last Saturday by the party’s national election commission chairperson Engelbert Rugeje.
Zanu PF Mashonaland Central provincial chairperson Kazembe Kazembe confirmed the latest development, saying Makamba does not meet the criteria.
According to the guidelines for one to qualify to represent the ruling party as MP you should have served at least at provincial level for a minimum effective time of five years, well versed with national issues and should also have been part of the party’s district structures for a five years.
“We submitted all CVs regardless of whether one had been recommended or not to the party HQ,” said Kazembe Kazembe.
“We got the final list for aspiring candidates for Mashonaland Central province and yes Makamba’s name was there, but according to the national election commission criteria he did not meet the said requirements.”
“Our guidelines are very clear that the final decision as to who qualifies is made by the party’s national elections commission and the decision is based on a clearly spelt out criteria.”
Makamba returned to Zimbabwe after 17 years of self-imposed exile.
Despite what Kazembe said some sources within the province told this publication that the national election commission has also made it clear that denigrating other candidates is an offence
Few days ago, an audio recording went viral on social media with Makamba arranging the recruitment of state media journalists to smear campaign ICT Minister Supa Mandiwanzira and Ozias Bvute who is the board chairperson for POTRAZ.
The audio was reportedly leaked by Zanu PF activists and social media socialite Acie Lumumba.
Makamba who has been elusive to the local media is heard giving instructions on what has to be done.
“The first person we must deal with is Supa… He is the snake whose head must be crushed. We need to have (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa dismissing him.
“The problem is that he is being protected by (Vice President) Chiwenga but we must just go after him…,” Makamba is heard saying.
