A speeding driver who was fleeing from a hit-and-run accident got into worse trouble in Mucheke in Masvingo on Sunday when he crashed into four pedestrians walking on the side of the road and killed a Form 4 pupil from Christian High.
Chenai Nziramasanga (16) died on the spot, her friend Faith Hanya and Blessed Mudo escaped with minor injuries while a fourth woman whose name The Mirror could not establish is admitted at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
Ironically Nziramasanga’s father was killed in an accident along Masvingo – Zvishavane Road in February this year.
Acting Masvingo provincial Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the accident and urged motorists to respect road rules all the time.
Zerty Takura, a resident told The Mirror that the driver Edson Zavare who crashed into the four pedestrians had hit another car at Majange Shopping Centre in Mucheke and sped off. The driver of the car allegedly followed Zavare after realising that he was not stopping resulting in a high speed chase.
Zavare failed to negotiate a slight curve almost a kilometre away as he approached Yeukai Business Centre and he veered off the road before his car landed in a ditch looking in the opposite direction. The deceased was hit and she flew high into the air before she landed in some tall grass 20 metres away from the scene of accident.
It took some time before people at the scene found Nziramasanga’s lifeless body.
The driver sustained a serious deep head cut and were all taken to Masvingo General Hospital but the other 3 were seriously injured.
Abigal Nziramasanga said her sister was a humble and ever-smiling girl.
“My sister was very humble, always happy and very respectful and it is quite painful to lose such a great person in my life”, said Abigal.
