Five people travelling from Harare to Gutu in a Toyota Regius died on Tuesday when the vehicle burst its rear tyre, veered of the road and crashed into a tree.
The accident happened at the 114km peg near Beatrice.
One of the dead was Remmington Mudoti who was a security guard in Chivhu and will be buried in Buhera. He died on the spot.
The other deceased are Joyce Ngomambi (48), a teacher at Hwiru Primary School at Mpandawana and her daughter Tamari Ngomambi (21). Rebecca Muchenje (40) of Gutu and Chamisa Musevenzo (45) of Chivhu also died in the accident. These four died at Chivhu General Hospital.
Chivhu Police District officer commanding operations Superintendent Oscar Chagwiza confirmed the accident.
Nicholas Paivha (62) who was driving the vehicle and his wife Josephine Mudzingwa (50) are critically injured and The Mirror understands that they have since been transferred to Harare.
The Mirror also understands that Ngomambi of Mpandawana had the vehicle to Paivha to drive his wife to Harare. Mudzingwa is a tutor at Murambinda Hospital where Paivha also stays.
Information from the police indicates that the Toyota motor vehicle had a right rear tyre burst.
Sup Chagwiza said that the place where the accident happened has become a black spot because it’s a clear and straight stretch where drivers tend to overspeed.
