A 35-year-old Mutare man faces murder charges after he recently took a hoe and struck his 65-year-old mother to death following a dispute over a television remote control.
Police confirmed the incident, saying investigation were still progress to ascertain what transpired on the fateful day.
Manicaland Police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said the suspect, Shingirai Chinhengo, who is believed to be mentally challenged, used the garden tool to strike Ennah Chinhengo on the head and cheek.
According to police, the incident was ignited by a misunderstanding over the use of a remote control between Shingirai and his niece when the two were watching television in the dining room.
When she felt she was losing the argument, the niece went out to report the matter to Ennah, her grandmother, who was outside working in the garden.
Shingirai, it is further alleged, followed his niece outside and had an exchange of words with his mother who was holding a hoe in her hand.
“The suspect snatched the hoe from his mother`s hand and struck her several times on the hand and cheek,” said Kakohwa.
Fearing for her own life, the niece fled the scene and reported the matter to one Patience Jekwa (43) who lives nearby.
Jekwa arrived ten minutes later and found Ennah lying in a pool of blood. She then alerted other neighbours.
The now deceased was rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital and died the following day.
The matter was reported to police who arrested the suspect.
