MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa tried to retrieve his driver who had been bundled into a Toyota Harrier by suspected state security agents, party spokesman Jacob Mafume has said.
Video footage of the incident has raised questions as to why Chamisa appeared to be trying to enter the alleged abductors’ vehicle before he was grabbed and pulled back by security aides.
“The scuffle you see in that video was an attempt to extract Chamisa’s driver. If you look towards the end of the video, the door is opened while the vehicle is moving and someone jumps out,” Mafume said.
“You will notice that the Fortuner attempted to give chase but stopped when the driver managed to jump out.”
Additional comment by Mafume available in the audio above.
Efforts to secure government comment were unsuccessful as Ministry of Information permanent secretary Nick Mangwana had not responded to questions at the time of writing.
