Residents at Mupandawana Growth Point in Gutu have mourned over the influx of young commercial sex workers who are operating from night spots at the growth point.
The residents believe this is sign of moral decadence are calling for intervention measures.
Residents at Mupandawana are worried that contrary to being the love nest that Jonah Moyo sang about, Gutu is turning out to be a place where moral decadence is thriving in the dead of the night due to the young commercial sex workers who are now a common feature at night spots.
These young commercial sex workers operate in secrecy, hence they are a difficult lot to identify and assist, according to the National Aids Council officials in Masvingo.
When the ZBC News visited some of the sites they frequent, the young girls quickly vanished out of sight.
Masvingo Province National Aids Council Manager Mr Edgar Muzulu said the phenomenon of young commercial sex workers is not peculiar to Gutu alone, but says other districts in the province are reporting high numbers of young commercial sex workers.
“The problem with engaging sex workers is that they are a hidden group, they are operating in secrecy, there are pushed into sex work due to a number of reasons,” said Mr Muzulu.
Engaging the underage sex workers in surveys or case studies is proving to be a challenge due to ethical legal challenges which deem them as too young to be interviewed.
