JUST IN: Car importers abandon vehicles at Beitbridge Border Post after failing to raise forex duty

There is not a single vehicle that has been cleared at Beitbridge Border Post today as car importers failed to raise duty in foreign currency as announced by the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube in his budget statement yesterday.

“There is a big crisis at the border. This Government is insensitive, even importers who brought in their cars from Messina and started the clearing process with Zimra yesterday have been asked to pay in foreign currency.

“All importers that I know of have abandoned their vehicles because they failed to raise the required foreign currency. Zvadhakwa (there is no more business here),” said an agent who declined to be named.

To make matters worse car storage companies have with effect from today started charging storage facilities in US$ only. This includes Vice President Kembo Mohadi’s Malindi Transit Shed.
