A caretaker will spend the next 12 years in prison after he was convicted for raping a teenage girl who stayed at the same house with him in Mt Hampden recently.

Mickias Magavagava, 60, was recently convicted after a full trial by a Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande who said predators like him required a lengthy custodial sentence.

“The complainant looked up to you as a guardian or as a grandparent, but you went on to destroy her being.

“Her future is shattered because of your actions and a custodial sentence will be a lesson to the accused as well as would be offenders,” said the judge.

Prosecuting, Netsai Mushayabasa proved that Magavagava committed the offence on August 13 in Mt Hampden.

Court heard that the 16-year-old victim was playing outside with her friends when Magavagava, who was holding a freezit cool drink, called her through the window.

Court heard he instructed the complainant to enter the house and she complied.

He then ordered her to go to his bedroom and lie on the bed facing upwards.

He went on to undress and rape the teenager twice.

Court heard that he ordered the girl to take a quick bath and not disclose the attack to anyone.

However, the teenager told her friend what had happened.

The friend advised her not to bath in case Magavagava disputes the allegations.

The case was then reported to the police, leading to his arrest.
