IT may be the leading show on television in terms of ratings but behind the scenes, drama at SABC1's mega hit soapie Uzalo, can make for another great show.
According to a reliable source, wellknown actress Leleti Khumalo who acted in Sarafina as Sarafina, and plays MaMdletshe in Uzalo, is leaving the show due to a salary dispute. At the same time, the flamboyant GC is said to have left the show but is now back after his cries for a raise were heard. As if it is not enough, sources say there was a breakin and the crew members belongings were stolen.
LELETI LEAVES THE SHOW FOR GOOD
There were rumours that Uzalo was planning to retrench some of its actors. When the news reached Leleti's ears, she decided to call it quits. There are other reasons why she is leaving.
"She felt that she had done everything she could for the show. Leleti is a legend and knows her story, so she wouldn't stick around and wait for her salary to be cut in half," says the source.
Another source says, "Leleti is leaving because she has other commitments. She has another show to produce, even though there were whispers about money problems and payments."
Attempts to contact Leleti for a comment were unsuccessful.
KHAYA IS BACK IN THE GAME
Another actor who nearly left over money woes is Khaya. He had problems with the producers over an increase, which resulted in him leaving the show for a while. It's alleged that producers renegotiated with Khaya and convinced him to come back to the show. "It's no secret that GC's character brought fire to the show.
There were problems between Khaya and the producers but he will be coming back. Anyone would want their salary to be increased. They renegotiated his salary increase, that's why he is coming back," says the source.
When Move! contacted Khaya, he refused to comment referring us to the show's public relations manager.
Responding to the allegations, Uzalo's public relations account executive, Koketso Phala, says, "All actors on the current season are still with Uzalo. The show has not yet worked out who leaves and stays for Season 4. An official statement will be shared later this year."
A LACK OF SECURITY ON SET
Besides complaining about being underpaid, the crew's needs are apparently also not being met. They are also complaining about a lack of security on set, amongst other things.
"The producers won't give actors and crew members what they want, that's why they want to leave. The security on set is also not tight. Crew members' laptops were taken during a break-in. Police are investigating the case," says a trusted source.
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
It's not the first time that the show has lost its best actors. In January 2016, they fired Mpumelelo Bhulose, who played the role of Gxabashe. A year later, Kay Sibiya, who played Ayanda Mdletshe, left the show. The two were undoubtedly a firm favourite among viewers. Kay later revealed that he didn't leave the show on good terms and that he felt unappreciated even though he gave his 100 percent to the show.
