Some 11 family members have appeared at Murambinda Magistrate Court where they are being accused of tormenting a relative who they accuse of bewitching and killing 38 relatives.
Winia Maponda (70) of Chikandiwa Village under Chief Nyashanu is now pleading for a protection order from Magistrate Dennis Mangosi and the case was heard on Friday last week.
Maponda (70) said that the respondents are in the habit of forcing her husband to beat her up for the alleged witchcraft and they also forced the two to have sex in front of villagers as punishment for the witchcraft.
She said on September 25, 2018, the respondents who include Sarai Matsvai, Peter Masiya and George Masiya came to her homestead and accused her of witchcraft and forced her husband to beat her up with a log which they gave him.
On October 25, 2018 Enock Chikandiwa who is the village head (also one of the rspondents) summoned a meeting at which she was again accused of being a witch by the respondents. They force marched Maponda and her husband to their homestead and directed the husband to beat her up with a log again.
The respondents led by Munyanyi Mugusha who is the head of the family said Muponda is the one who called the meeting and told the family she wanted to surrender some witchcraft tools that she could no longer control.
“Muponda is the one who approached us saying that she was practicing some witchcraft and that she is no longer able to control her powers since they are now killing the family members. she admitted that she had already killed 38 family members in front of the whole village,” said Mugusha.
The matter was postponed after Maponda’s case was taken over by the Legal Resource Foundation.
