JUST IN: Consumers dealt another hammer blow as price of bread shoots up

Consumers have been dealt yet another hammer blow, the price of bread has gone up again, this time by 50 percent.

In a letter dated March 5, 2018, Innscor Africa Limited, which runs the country’s largest bakery, Baker’s Inn advised its customers that the retail price of standard loaf of bread had gone up by about 50 percent with effect from March 6. As a result of the increase, a standard loaf is now going for $2.70, up from $1.80.

The government had previously announced that it had engaged a local baker to produce cheaper loaves of bread using local materials. However, there seems to have been no development since the announcement.
