The European Union has called upon the government of Zimbabwe to reveal what happened to missing activist Itai Dzamara who was abducted by suspected members of the Central Intelligence Organisation on the 9th of March 2015 while having a haircut at a local barber shop in Harare.

In a statement on Friday, the EU called on the governmrnt to do justice to the case which has remained unexplained four years on.

“Four years after his abduction, Itai Dzamara remains missing. We call on Government of Zimbabwe to shed light on his fate and serve justice, and to tackle all human rights violations decisively, in line with Zimbabwe’s repeated commitment to human rights, freedoms and national healing,” the mission said Friday.

Itai Dzamara, who was also a journalist, was kidnapped by five men as he left a barbershop near his home in Harare. He has not been seen since then. He had staged a series of demonstrations against the former president Robert Mugabe calling on him to step down accusing him of running down the country.

A protestor and fellow activist Dirk Frey, described his compatriot as brave and courageous.

“He gave us the courage even when we were beaten, arrested and tortured. He wanted a free, fair and just Zimbabwe,” Frey said.

“We and our children deserve a just Zimbabwe. It will not be handed on a silver platter, we must fight for it.”

The government has denied involvement in Dzamara’s disappearance and has said it had no information on his fate.

The global rights watchdog Amnesty International called on authorities in Zimbabwe to scale up the search for Dzamara.

“People don’t just vanish into thin air. Someone out there knows what happened to Itai Dzamara,” said Deprose Muchena, the regional director for Amnesty in Southern Africa.

“The government must scale up Itai’s search. Impunity must not be allowed to thrive,” he said in a statement.

But exiled Professor Jonathan Moyo has always insisted that Dzamara was abducted by the MID under the command of Brigadier General Mike Sango.

“I got to know from a high level source with access to the information; that ZDF’s Military Intelligence Department (MID) abducted Itai Dzamara & subjected him to extreme torture like in the gukurahundi & State of Emergency days. Mnangagwa, Chiwenga & Mohadi know about this!

“The MID officer who oversaw this is Brigadier General Mike Sango who was then CID & is now Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Russia. Why did they do this? To build a case against President Mugabe; as they did on 7 March 2007 with their savage attack on the late Morgan Tsvangirai!” Prof Moyo said on Twitter last year.

Mugabe who presided over Zimbabwe’s slide from a regional breadbasket to a perennial food importer, stepped down following a military intervention in 2017 November.
