Farmers count losses as massive fire burns six tobacco barns

Tobacco worth an estimated US$12 000 was destroyed when fire gutted six barns at Vilvekia Farm in Guruve.

More than 15 tobacco farmers are counting their losses at Vilvekia Farm in Guruve after fire destroyed six barns while they were in the process of curing.

The cause of the fire which broke out around 2 am could not be established but the fire razed to the ground everything which was inside the six barns.

Chairman of the farmers Mr Plan Kudiro highlighted the tobacco which had been reduced to ashes in the barns was their best grade which they anticipated to take for auction in April.

“We lost some tobacco in the fields since it has been a difficult season and we had invested all our hopes in this crop in the barns. We could not salvage anything.

“Now we are faced with having to repair the barns since everything was reduced to ashes,” said Kudiro.

The farmers who were on contract with companies like Mashonaland Tobacco and Zimbabwe Leaf Tobacco are now saddled with the daunting task of repaying loans to the tobacco contracting companies as their crop was not insured.
