ARVs, family planning and sex tablets worth US$500 000 found hidden at unregistered pharmacy

POLICE detail busted a drug cartel and discovered drugs worth half a million United States dollars hidden at an unregistered pharmacy in Waterfalls last Thursday.

Some of the drugs destined for National Pharmaceuticals and National Family Planning organization included ARVs, family planning tablets, sex enhancers and vaccines for rabbis.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said three people have been arrested in connection with the drugs and investigations are in progress.

“The Zimbabwe Republic police is investigating a case of drugs worth US$500 000 that were found at a pharmacy in Waterfalls,” said Ass-Comm Nyathi.

“Police received information that there was a pharmacy selling drugs at a very low prize raising concerns and made a raid.

“After the raid it was discovered that the pharmacy was operating illegally and had unregistered drugs not cleared by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe.

“This illegal pharmacy was also selling sex enhancing drugs and had vaccines for rabbis yet they had no permit which allows them to trade or keep such vaccines.

“The conditions under which the vaccines were being kept were not favorable in terms of storage.

“They had 1720 part 4 dangerous drugs and our fears are that they could have been being sold to youth.

“They had drugs which were addressed, in terms of packaging as a government of Zimbabwe consignment from India yet no proper documentation for possession was available.

“This indicates that these drugs have been obtained in suspicious circumstances which are under investigations.

“They also had family planning tablets ear marked for the Family Planning Council of Zimbabwe an indication that they were from donors.

“Total value of the drugs is US$500 000,” said Ass-Comm Nyathi urging members of the public to continue informing police of any illegal activities within their community.
