LATEST: MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa disappoints Elias Mudzuri

The MDC Alliance’s forthcoming congress has been described by some party rebels as the worst congress in the history of the opposition party with reports that Vice President Elias Mudzuri is set to fall by the wayside.

Mudzuri has reportedly thrown his weight behind the Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy pressure group’s stance to hold an extraordinary congress first in line with the party’s constitution.

Events leading up to congress set for this May has seen Chamisa’s main rivals such as Douglas Mwonzora pulling out of the race, while the future of Mudzuri in opposition politics is reportedly hanging by a thread.

Mudzuri’s explanation and assessment of the run up to the May congress reveals a bitter man. He told ZBC News over the phone that he is disappointed by how Chamisa has manipulated the party and some sections of the media which are propping up his campaign rather than exposing Chamisa’s violent, vote rigging and intimidating behaviour.

One of the founding members of the Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy pressure group, Warship Dumba, who has been closely monitoring the MDC nomination process, said Mudzuri is one politician who respects the MDC constitution but his advice falls on the deaf ear of Chamisa and his cabal who are bent on destroying the opposition legacy left by Dr Tsvangirai.

“From the beginning, Chamisa grabbed power, but to add salt to injury, he abandoned the constitution and started doing his funny politics, people like Mudzuri made it clear that the MDC was supposed to go for an extra-ordinary congress first in line with the constitution, but Chamisa decided to do his short cuts to rush to call for a congress, which is null and void, according to the constitution. The future of the MDC is in shambles. Chamisa is destroying the party come the May 24 – 26 congress,” said Dumba.

Battle lines have reportedly been drawn for the vice president’s posts, with sources close to Chamisa’s game plan saying Morgan Komichi is tipped for the first vice president’s post, with Welshman Ncube filling the second vice president’s post to balance the tribal act ahead of Tendai Biti and others.
