Tragedy as 2 Form 6 students drown in river, mermaids (njuzu) blamed

A black cloud hung over Lundi High School in Mwenezi at the opening of the second term on Tuesday after two Upper 6th students drowned in Mwenezi River.

Douglas Maramba and Prissim Chemvere who were at the school doing holiday lessons drowned while swimming on Saturday.

District Schools Inspector Luckson Zanamwe said he received the news with great shock and he visited the scene together with Mwenezi Chief Executive Officer Albert Chivanga, District Human Resources Officer Lax Gondo, Lundi Deputy head Tifanos Sibanda and the Police.

It is understood that the two students were day scholars who were lodging at a house near the Mission school. One of the boys was from Rutenga while the other was from Chikombedzi.

Sources said that the two left the Mission school at around 12pm on Saturday and they were never seen again after that. On Sunday a search party was put together and the two boys’ clothes were discovered by the side of a pool along the river.

The search continued but the bodies only surfaced on Monday and they were taken to Neshuro District Hospital mortuary.

Some people feared that their drowning could have been caused by mermaids.
