A 23-year-old man from Mwenezi learned that it doesn’t pay to steal after he was sent to prison for stealing R1 000 which he could not use.
Alexio Zerera who resides at Village 8 Rennette, under Chief Neshuro in Mwenezi told Resident Magistrate Honesty Musiiwa that most of the R1 000 he stole from his aunt Edina Zerera was stolen at the night club before he could use it.
“Yakangotsakatikavo (it just disappeared)” he told Musiiwa.
Zerera was found with just R200 on him. He pleaded guilty to stealing the money which was under the mattress.
It is the State case that on June 7, 2019 at around 3pm, Edina locked her doors and went to Mwenezi River to water her garden. The accused realised that his aunt was not at home and he broke the key of the locked bedroom door using an unknown object.
He took R1 000 which was under the mattress, wrapped it in a cloth and sneaked away. The aunt came back at 6pm and was shocked to find that the money was no longer under the mattress.
She made a report to the Police leading to Zerera’s arrest. Only R200 was recovered.
After being asked by Musiiwa on how he spent the money he said “yakangotsakatikavo”. Musiiwa asked for clarification on the term he had used.
“I only used R200 and the rest was stolen at the bar before I squandered it,” he said.
