Chaos as residents bash thief with hammers, stab and set him on fire

A MAN who was set alight in Verulam, north of Durban, on Thursday died from his injuries in hospital on Friday.

According to Prem Balram, spokesman for Reaction Unit South Africa, Innocent Mthethwa (31) was accused of stealing a grass cutting machine in the Parkgate area.

“He was doused with petrol and set alight, allegedly by 10 to 15 people,” said Balram. He said they were called to a house off Tottenham Road at 11.12am after Mthethwa collapsed in the driveway.

“The caller confirmed he had suffered extensive burns to more than 90% of his body. Mthethwa told paramedics he had stolen a grass cutting machine from contractors. He said the contractors chased him and bust him at the Ottawa and R102 intersection with help from residents.”

The mob then took him to nearby veld, where they moered him with hammers and stabbed him before setting him alight.

“They drove off in a white Toyota Hilux van.” KZN police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said:

“A case of murder is being investigated by the Verulam cops. A 31-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday. He’s expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court this week.”
