A man from Nyazvidzi Small Scale Farming Area in Gutu committed suicide on Thursday last week allegedly because his two wives who are sisters were seeing other men.
Although relatives were mum about the issue, mourners at the funeral said Jotham Chakawa (40) of Farm number 87 who married two sisters, Letwin Gwena (27) and Sekai Gwena (19) was for sometime not happy with his wives’ movements and he suspected that they were acting in cahoots and had adulterous affairs.
Chakawa is alleged to have made two earlier attempts on his life over the same issue, said sources. Masvingo Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the incident.
On Thursday Chakawa arrived back home from Mandeya Business Center where he had gone to collect Social Welfare food aid. Sources said he actually passed through Farm 96 where he joined friends for a traditional beer drink before leaving for his place.
At home his wives offered him sadza left in the afternoon but he asked for freshly cooked food and the wives started preparing while he took a rest in his bedroom. After preparing the food they sent a child to call his father but he was nowhere to be found.
They rang his phone and because it was dark they saw it lighting from a Mubvumira tree in the yard and they were shocked to find him hanging there. They untied a nylon rope that was tied around his neck as he seemed to be still breathing. He however, passed on a few minutes later.
Police came to the scene but did not have petrol to take the body to Masvingo for postmortem.
Police allowed the relatives to bury the body after both parties were convinced that the cause of death was suicide.
