TOBACCO farmers last week staged a demonstration at Interoll Agro Tobacco Sales Floor (TSF) over the failure by the company to pay them their money in time as per their agreement.
The farmers also complained over the shelter they are living whilst waiting for their money.
In an interview with H-Metro, tobacco farmers said they sold their tobacco last month and up to today, they have not received anything.
“It’s now a month and we have not been given our money as per our agreement that the farmers will receive their money after three days but now it’s more than four weeks without given our money.
“We only have bank statements and nothing has been deposited into our accounts and it is not good for us the tobacco farmers, looking at the hard work invested for the tobacco to yield,” said one of the farmers.
Farmers also said they are living in dirty rooms whilst waiting for their money.
“We are living in dirty rooms where there ablution facilities are poor and we do not have money to continue to buy food on daily bases.
“We are suffering yet we have sold our tobacco and these bosses are not doing anything to pay us,” said one of the farmers.
Farmers also said that they have trusted the theme of the Tobacco Sales Floor, “Kupedza nhamo yemurimi” yet it simply means “adding more misery to farmers.
Grester Sakatire, a tobacco farmer, cried saying that she is not feeling well and no attention has been given to her by the company.
“I have four weeks living in a dirty room and have not received any treatment yet I do not have money to go back to my rural home.
“I want my money so that I will be able to get treatment on time,” said Sakatire.
Operation manager, Thomas Moga said Ecobank is delaying the process to pay farmers their money.
“EcoBank is delaying the process to pay tobacco farmers.
“We will make sure that the farmers will get their money in time since these farmers are our clients every season,” he said.
