MDC DEMO: Current situation in Mutare…As police maintain heavy presence in strategic points

ITS calm in Mutare with residents and entrepreneurs conducting their businesses unhindered.

Shops and banks are open. Public transport operators are ferrying commuters to and from the city centre.

No incidences of violence or demonstrations have been recorded so far as the police have maintained heavy presence along strategic points.

Interviewed residents said they were fed up in partaking in protests that yield nothing.

Some said they run informal businesses and boycotting going to their workplaces would worsen their economic well being.

Officer Commanding Mutare District Police Chief Superintendent Florence Marume said the situation was calm.

“We haven’t received any reports on the illegal protests. We have deployed our officers across the district to maintain law and order,” she said.

In the morning the High Court dismissed an urgent application that had been lodged by the MDC Alliance to nullify the prohibition of its planned demonstration.

The ruling meant that the demonstrations were illegal.

However, some defiant opposition supporters who gathered in Harare to demonstrate were dispersed by the police despite their own leaders calling off the protests in compliance with the court ruling.
