MUTARE: An illegal miner died Sunday while others two cheated death by a whisker after a shaft collapsed while they were panning gold at Premiere Central along Mutare River.
Police confirmed the incident.
Manicaland Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxon Chananda said those who survived were trapped in soil and rocks after the mine collapse.
Chananda said the deceased has been identified as Tsvarai Bakare, 23, while his colleagues who survived are Milton Pakaza, 28, and Edmore Togo, 27.
The police spokesperson said the three went to Premiere Central along Mutare River to mine illegally and entered a 7-metre deep and 5-metre wide mine shaft which later collapsed and trapped them.
A mine worker, Tendai Chigumira, 35, saw some movements and went to investigate what was transpiring.
He saw two of the panners trapped with rocks and soil shouting for help while Bakare was nowhere to be found.
Mine workers rushed to the scene and managed to carry out a rescue operation but Bakare was already dead.
Chananda urged members of the public to formalise their operations with relevant authorities to avoid such incidences.
