Several gunshots disturbed the peace and tranquility of Masvingo on Friday night when two robbers fired shots into the air as they tried to escape after a failed attempt to rob a popular money changer.
The incident happened near Chicken Inn at the traffic lights controlled junction along Robert Mugabe Road in the CBD.
One of the suspected robbers Nkosiphile Sibanda (30) who was apprehended at Mucheke River while running away from a pursuing mob appeared in court the next morning on Saturday.
He appeared before magistrate Candice Kaseke for initial appearance. He was remanded to November 14, 2019.
Allegations by the State led by Malvern Mapako are that on Friday night, Sibanda in the company of an accomplice who is still at large only identified as Tsano went to Chicken armed with two pistols.
Sibanda and Tsano approached the complainant who is a well-known money changer in his Toyota Corolla and masqueraded as travelers who wanted to change US$ for Rands and they were allowed into the complainant’s car.
While inside the car, the duo produced a pistol each and demanded money. They threatened to shoot the complainant if he resisted their orders. The complainant however, bolted got out of the car and sped off with his money while screaming and alarming other vendors.
