A HARARE bouncer was on Saturday shot while trying to break-off a fight between merry-makers at Mashwede Plaza drinking outlet.

Edward Mapfurirwa was reportedly fatally shot by 34-year-old Tawanda Trymore Jarnett on his upper right arm bicep.

Jarnett appeared at the Harare magistrate’s court on Monday before magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa who granted him ZWL500 bail on condition that he reports to his nearest police station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

It is the state’s case that on January 4, around 10pm, Jarnett was drinking beer with his friends at Mashwede Plaza, along the Highglen Road in Glen View, Harare.

Accused allegedly had a misunderstanding with other patrons who were also drinking beer at the same spot.

During the scuffle, Jarnett allegedly pulled out a Tokarev pistol.

He is said to have fired one shot in the air to scare away his opponents.

The public and security guard reportedly tried to disarm the accused.

Accused then fired another shot, which is said to have hit Mapfurirwa.

It is the state’s case that Jarnett’s firearm certificate was issued for the purpose of protection of cash transit only.

He failed to comply with the condition on which his firearm certificate was issued, by taking the pistol to a drinking outlet where he used it in contrary to the condition, the court heard.

A CCTV footage showed Jarnett allegedly committing the crime and is being held as an exhibit.

He was remanded to February 12.
