A 19-YEAR OLD housemaid working in Harare reportedly strangled a boy aged five (5) who was under her care to death under unclear circumstances before she rushed to get assistance from a neighbour under the pretext the boy was not waking up from a midday nap.
Memory Zvinzveku appeared before a Harare Magistrate facing murder charges and was remanded in custody with instructions to approach the High Court for bail.
It is the State’s case that on January 21, at about 1200 hours, Zvinzveku went to Tafara 1 Primary School to collect the now deceased whom she took home.
The deceased changed from his school uniform before going out to play with his agemates.
It is alleged Zvinzveku followed the deceased who was at their neighbours place where he was playing with a friend his age. Zvinzveku allegedly took the deceased home where she strangled the minor child to death and placed him on the bed.
After the incident Zvinzveku went and told one Fadzanai Kakunguwo (30) that the minor child was not waking up and upon enquiry, she noticed scratches on the dead child’s neck and that he was motionless and showing no signs of life.
On January 22, a postmortem was conducted and the doctor concluded that the cause of death was strangling.
It was also discovered that at the time of death, the minor child was wearing a white T-shirt which was later found stashed in a washing basket with bloodstains while the body of the child was found wearing a green t-shirt.
