JUST IN: Job Sikhala in court for plotting to remove Mnangagwa from office, Judge delivers judgement

Movement for Democratic Change Alliance vice national chairperson Job Sikhala has been acquitted of subversion charges by Masvingo High Court Judge Justice Garainesu Mawadze today.

Sikhala was arrested in July last year. He was charged with subverting constitutional government as defined in section 22(2)(a)(iii) of the Criminal Law (Codification&Reform) Act for allegedly advocating for the overthrowing of a government through unconstitutional means.

The charges came after Sikhala told a rally in Bikita, Masvingo province that the opposition MDC Alliance party will stage a mega-demonstration that will bring down the government.

Said Sikhala:

“We are a committed leadership that will give Zanu PF headaches and [Amos] Chibaya was not lying or joking about the war and fight we are going to take to the doorsteps of Emmerson Mnangagwa. We are going to overthrow him before 2023, that is not a joke.”

Justice Mawadze said that politicians should be allowed to be politicians. He said that there was nothing wrong with what Job said and found him not guilty of the treason charges.

Meanwhile, proceedings at the Masvingo High Court where MDC Alliance’s trial for subversion was taking place today temporarily stopped this morning after tear smoke filtered into the courtroom.

Areas around the High Court precincts were in complete lock down as police and belligent MDC Alliance supporters were involved in a cat and mouse game.
