A 24-YEAR-OLD illegal miner was sentenced to one year imprisonment by Guruve magistrate Shingirai Mutiro yesterday for breaking into his cousin’s room and stealing a Bible.
Tatenda Chikumba of Nyamhondoro village pleaded guilty to the charges before Mutiro who conditionally suspended the sentence to 280 hours of community service at Nyamhondoro clinic.
In mitigation the miner pleaded for community service saying he committed the offense out of poverty.
“Your worship, I was pushed into committing this offence by poverty. I used to depend on artisanal mining but of late the police have been stopping us from mining ,so please can you give me a lighter sentence,” lamented Chikumba.
Prosecutor Carson Kundiona told the court that on February 10 Chikumba broke into Kudakwashe Nyamukondiwa’s room by destroying the door
Upon gaining entry he prepared sadza and beef which he ate before embarking on his mission.
He loaded the empty sadza pot in a satchel and stole a Bible before leaving the room.
Chikumba dumped the pot in the bush together with his towel.
The complainant subsequently found his pot in the bush and filed a police report leading to the arrest of the convict.
