Zupco fires 40 bogus bus drivers following a number of deadly accidents

ZIMBABWE United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has fired 40 drivers for incompetence and inexperience following a number of fatal crashes last month, Zim Morning Post has learnt.

The move raises questions about the effectiveness of ZUPCO internal selection processes and passenger safety.

Last week two buses were involved in accidents where a number of passengers were hurt.

Impeccable sources told this publication that no serious vetting took place during recruitments in the provinces.

“There is a storm brewing at Zupco as it has terminated contracts of 40 drivers citing that they are not qualified.

“Several drivers are incompetent and have been recruited without due diligence on their qualifications,” said the source.

Zupco chief executive Evaristo Madangwa could neither confirm nor deny the development.

Madangwa told this publication that he was in a meeting.

Meanwhile, Zupco has been haunted by massive corruption and violation of corporate governance tenets.

In December 2019, 42 buses and commuter omnibuses failed a physical fitness test conducted by the Vehicle Inspection department.
